Identifying the Real Diamonds

Identifying Diamonds

Diamonds are the crown jewels of the world. Diamond trading has been on a significant rise worldwide. Distinguishing fake diamonds from real diamonds can be a daunting task, although it can be made easy by following some steps –

  1. The Refractive index of diamonds makes it easy to identify them based on their property to bend light, which passes through them. Other stones like Quartz have lower refractive index.
  2. A real diamond's refraction is always in shades of Grey, while a fake diamond will display light in rainbow colors.
  3. Observing the surface of the diamond for scratches or nicks can help you understand its counterfeits. Diamond is the hardest substance in nature and they do not suffer scratches easily.
  4. Placing the diamond on water will also help to identify its counterfeits; a real diamond sinks while most fake one's float.
  5. The usage of a diamond tester, a handy gadget can also help you reveal the originality of the gem.
  6. Original diamonds will display flaws in them, if you find a stone that is fairly clear then its best to be skeptical of it.
  7. Counterfeit diamonds are mostly made of glass, so they won’t have the same physical qualities like the original diamond. An added surface of shellac, to give it a realistic look, fools most unsuspecting buyers.
  8. A newspaper test is popular among expert buyers where the readability of the text is tested. If the text is readable, then it’s a fake diamond.
  9. A Fog test can be used to test the originality. After passing the diamond through a fog, if the fog clears off quickly then it’s a real diamond or you can be right in arousing your suspicion

Although, there are many ways; education about diamonds and counterfeits is one of the most effective ways to make diamonds your safe and best investments.
