Jewelry Casting and Wax Designing

Jewelry Casting and Wax Designing

Just as any other metal, gold is also found in impure form, which undergoes long process before all the impurities are removed. This gold is further mixed with other components, to obtain the desired quality. A proper design is selected and this gold is then molded and designed in a desired format and style for the customer. Casting and wax designing is a process of turning gold into elegant ornament such as ring, necklace, pendent, bracelet, etc.

Modern Casting Method:
In modern jewelry casting method, once any jewelry design is selected, it is sent to the CAD (Computer Aided Designing) department, which develops an imaginary three-dimension image on the computer. After the design is approved, a wax design of that model is developed through wax solid molding machine. This modern molding machine is capable of developing a wax model of beads, thin wires, undercuts even in the hollow areas. After the inspection of the experts, the model is then ready for casting. Electronic burnout ovens are used for casting a clean, crisp and porosity free design. A magnetic barrel tumbler is used for finishing the design.

Lost Wax Casting Method:
Lost wax casting is an ancient method of designing jewelry. The jewelry is first designed on a wax, and then it is mounted in a flask and further surrounded by an investment, which is similar to Plaster of Paris. When the investment is hardened, the flask is heated or burnt in a burnout oven, until the wax is melted. This leaves an empty space or hole after the wax is melted. The flask is mounted in a casting machine, and then melted gold is poured into the flask and a gold jewelry of same size and shape of wax design is developed.
